The Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce has turned to its nearly 2,000 members to build up membership and strengthen the business organization.

During a Tuesday news conference at the organization's Valencia office, chamber leaders dressed in military-style outfits introduced "Operation Chamber Membership," a recruiting event that will be held from Sept. 1 to Oct. 12.

Although the chamber holds a recruiting event annually, this is the first time the organization has looked to its members to recruit others.

Participants who recruit enough new members will be eligible for a variety of prizes, ranging from electronics to international trips.

While speaking to a group of chamber supporters, Charlie Gill, chamber chairman of the board and "commander-in-chief" for "Operation Chamber Membership" gave an overview of the benefits of a chamber membership, which include networking opportunities to a range of committees for members to serve on.

Larry Mankin, president and CEO of the chamber, said with 9,000 businesses in the Santa Clarita Valley, participants have many ways to recruit businesses.

"Get out and sell for us," he said. "Get out there and sell for you."

The chamber is a not-for-profit organization, has been in the valley for 84 years and is the seventh largest Chamber of Commerce in the Los Angeles region.
