Jana Adkins: Open letter to Business readers

When I first joined The Signal as business editor three months ago, I was thrilled.

A resident of the city since 1994, I’ve subscribed to the newspaper since I moved here.

And while my previous employment took me out of the SCV nearly daily for 16 years, the one entity that kept me connected locally was The Signal.

Having been afforded the opportunity to both live and work in Santa Clarita, I have come to appreciate even more what a great city we have.

Business owners choose to set up their companies in the SCV because it is business-friendly. It is also an attractive place for business owners to live and raise their children.

Doing business in the Santa Clarita Valley is a lifestyle choice.

My goal has been to develop a business section that is focused on that lifestyle choice in a way that actively engages both business owners and readers.

Based on the feedback we’ve received to date, we appear to be making headway in putting the spotlight on local businesses in a way that is attracting new customers.

It has been my pleasure to get to know so many of the impressive people behind the stories I’ve written on local business.
I am amazed at the tenacity and resourcefulness of business owners who keep their businesses up and running. I salute each of you.

I am dedicated to creating a hyperlocal focus for business news that provides the readers with content they cannot get from other media. This is a great community, and we all need to support the businesses that operate within the SCV.

The greatest reward thus far has come from the readers who have responded to stories positively by supporting the businesses we’ve highlighted. Thank you.

I also want to let our advertisers know how much we appreciate their support of the local newspaper. The revamped business section has attracted some wonderful local businesses to advertise here, and for that I am grateful.

I’m proud to announce that we just launched a business section on Sundays, so that we will be providing coverage seven days a week. Columnist Ken Keller, who always gives such wise advice to business owners, will now appear on Sundays.

By the end of the month, we’re introducing new columns to the business section, which will appear on Wednesdays. The columns will rotate every other week, with one focusing on small business and the other featuring marketing.

The Business section now has its own tab on the menu bar of The Signal’s website, making it easier for readers to track business stories, news briefs and columns that have published.

We’ve introduced four new features and are working on more.

For those of you who are waiting for me to get back to you on a story, I apologize. Leads are coming in faster than I can process them.

To help speed up the process, I will be adding a new feature this week on The Signal’s website this week that will allow people to submit leads, providing enough information to develop stories more quickly.

Lastly, The Signal is your community newspaper. I welcome input from readers as to what kind of content they’d like to see, along with feedback on what we publish, so that the Business section continues to meet your interests as a reader.
