The Santa Clarita Valley has hosted part of the AMGEN Tour of California cycling race and seen local cross country programs receive national recognition and swimming programs rise to prominence.

Next summer, all three elements will come together for a weekend-long event.

Tri-California, Inc., in conjunction with the city of Santa Clarita, will host the inaugural TRIFECTA lifestyle-sports festival from June 3-5, 2011, combining running, cycling and triathlon events throughout the SCV, the organization announced this week.

Registration for the event begins Dec. 1 for people of all ages and skill levels.

"Our goal was to bring (together) the cycling world, the triathlon world and the running world, which are all the same types of people that have the same principles, are active people and have a desire in healthy families and healthy living," said Terry Davis, the founder and owner of Tri-California, Inc. "We thought it would be incredible to bring all three sports together for this ultimate celebration of active living."

Davis, who has been coordinating races for 29 years, said this is the first time Tri-California has put on an event like TRIFECTA.

Other cities considered for the three-day festival included San Diego, Santa Monica, Huntington Beach and Hermosa Beach, he said.

But after visiting the SCV, seeing Castaic Lake and evaluating the community and it's athletic climate, the decision was clear.

"It is one of the best-kept secrets," Davis said. "When I talk to people in Los Angeles and San Diego, they are not familiar with the valley and what's out there. We want to try to work at letting people know what an incredible area it is."

The running events include a 5K, 10K and half-marathon while the cycling races will be distances of 33 miles (Piccolo Fondo), 60 miles (Medio Fondo) and 110 miles (Gran Fondo).

Three types of triathlons will be offered - sprint, international distance and long course.

The sprint is a 500-yard swim, 10-mile ride and three-mile run. The international distance event consists of a one-mile swim, 30-mile bike ride and six-mile run. Finally, the long course is made up of a 1.5-mile swim, 60-mile ride and 15-mile run.

Participants can also go for the Triple Crown by competing in one event from each category.

A gala dinner, family events and a sports expo are also planned.

Olympic cycling silver medalist Mari Holden is expected to attend, as are Olympic triathlon bronze medalist Susan Williams and United States National Cycling champion Tony Cruz.

"Our whole philosophy at Tri-California is we really want to try to encourage and empower people to get out there and do recreation exercise," Davis said.
