Pets to hop on Santa’s lap

Community: Proceeds from event will benefit pets of needy families and spay and neuter services

Pet owners can share the holiday spirit with their four-legged loved ones at an event Saturday.

Animal lovers can have a picture taken of their pets with Santa from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The 20-year-old Santa Clarita Valley tradition serves as a fundraiser for the Santa Clarita Chapter of the Pet Assistance Foundation of California.

All money raised Saturday will help pay for low-cost spaying and neutering services for adopted animals and veterinary care for pets of needy families.

At the event, people are welcome to doll up their pets in seasonal attire and pose with Santa along with their pets.

High-quality, digital photographs, available for previews on a high-resolution monitor, can be purchased of any size in any amount. They can also be made into Christmas cards, coffee mugs and other memorable items.

“It is always fun to work with animals,” said Allan Cameron, a Pet Assistance volunteer and the event’s Santa. “But it can be a real challenge. We can have four dogs, and three of them look at the camera, and one looks away.”

In those cases, Cameron said, the photographer can take from 20 to 50 shots — sometimes more.

“We make sure that the image looks fine, exactly what people wanted,” Cameron said.

Professional photographer Zoe-Anne Fitzhugh and her husband, photo editor Bruce McFarland, are loyal Pet Assistance volunteers.

Normally, their photographs cost $150 to $200 dollars, but due to the charitable purpose of the event their work is available from $10 per print.

The “Pet Photos with Santa” event will take place at the Pet Supply Santa Clarita at 26831 Bouquet Canyon Road in Saugus.

The event will be repeated Dec. 11 at the same time and location. For details, call (661) 260-3140 and leave a message for a call back.
