On Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center will host an important event aimed at ensuring safety for local transit riders with disabilities.

The free workshop — provided through Santa Clarita Transit and Metro — will dispense key information on safety securement straps and premarking tie-down locations for disabled riders using mobility devises or scooters on buses.

SuzAnn Nelsen, Senior Center director of supportive services, urges community members who use mobility aids to attend the workshop.

“This event is about promoting safety and security while using public transportation, and that is of special importance when it comes to protecting our senior and disabled populations,” Nelsen said.

Participants of the workshop will receive new safety tether straps; meet with trained experts who will identify bright yellow premarking locations for mobility straps (which enable faster securement of wheelchairs and scooters); and attach tie-down hooks to tether straps or markings. In addition, the experts will recommend proper brake settings, and offer an optional lap or shoulder belt for comfort and stability.

Availability is limited and by appointment only. The Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center is located at 22900 Market St..
