U.S. needs to prevent disease, not just fix it

I couldn’t help but sigh at the Dec. 4 headline: “Panel wants more stomach bands.” According to this Associated Press article, another 12 million obese Americans “could soon qualify for surgery to implant a small, flexible stomach band designed to help them lose weight ...”

When will our country — the greatest in the world — take a strong stand on prevention of disease? Instead, we eagerly hand out billions of dollars in prescription drugs to help ailments and suggest surgeries when other alternatives would be more effective.

As a wellness chiropractic doctor, one of my missions is to help the world get healthy “one person at a time.” I help teach my patients how to move well, eat well and think well. How does something surgically implanted in one’s body teach anything?
