Environmental laws are not death of liberty

This is in response to Brian Baker’s Dec. 22 letter, “Government is trying to run our daily lives.”

Did the “free market of ideas” start recycling aluminum cans, glass bottles or plastic containers?

Is doing those things a positive idea? Absolutely.

Would the majority of us do it without environmentalists pushing for legislated California Redemption Value charges on those items? Absolutely not.

Equating environmental legislation involving those types of things to the death of liberty is ludicrous.

Traditional American conservatives can still buy whatever type of lightbulb they want, but the hope is that they will purchase the one that is best for the environment.

I am not a proponent of big government, but assuming the free market system will make decisions that are always best for America is like assuming that counting on oil as our best long-term source of energy is in the best interest of our planet.
