Mastrobuono Saugus' teacher of the Year
A sixth-grade teacher who started out as a music specialist is the Saugus Union School District's Teacher of the Year. Becky Mastrobuono not only gives her all in the classroom at Rosedell Elementary School in Saugus but also spends before and after school hours, weekends and her summer vacation helping, tutoring and mentoring her students, former students or anyone else who needs her help, said Rosedell Principal Cory Pak. Mrs. Mastrobuono approaches each day as an opportunity to touch the lives of her students while fully appreciating their touches in her life," Pak said. "She is readily available to students in answering any questions they might have and she has a delightful sense of humor that has shown students how to deal effectively with difficult situations." Mastrobuono joined the Saugus district in 1991 as a music specialist, became a classroom teacher in 1998 and is now head teacher at Rosedell.

Man arrested for stealing parking meters
A Canyon Country man was arrested early Monday with three parking meters stolen from a beach city, a sheriff's official said. Richard Day, 44, was seen sifting through items left in front of the Salvation Army at 17657 Sierra Highway at approximately 4 a.m., said Lt. Brenda Cambra of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station. During questioning, Day told deputies he was on parole, Cambra said. Deputies searched Day's car and found three meters that were cut from parking meter poles in Santa Monica, she said. The city of Santa Monica was contacted by sheriff's deputies and confirmed the three meters were from 23rd and Arizona streets in Santa Monica, Cambra said. Day is due in Santa Clarita Superior Court Wednesday.
