The six time national champion Saugus High School Dance Team is working toward another award winning year. The advisor and eight of the 20 team members are new to the team so they started bonding and training early for the 2008-2009 school year.

Advisor Bridget Groller greeted the new and returning teammates at the annual Welcome Dinner held at Red Robin in early June. In order to give the teammates an opportunity to get to know one another before they began training and dancing together, the seniors also coordinated a team pizza party, a day at Hurricane Harbor, a day at the beach, a tie-dye breakfast, a team only pool party, and a combination dance team/cheer squad pool party. The returning team members and their families also hosted a pool barbeque for all new team members and their families.

In addition to having fun, the team began practicing early and hard. While many students were sleeping in, they were up and running and dancing from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. every weekday July 14 to Aug. 8. They also attended the USA Elite Dance Camp at Cal Lutheran University July 31 to Aug. 3 where the team was given two awards. Groller said she is a big believer that keeping technique strong is just as important as good choreography. She has already held three master classes for the team and she has several more scheduled.

In addition to dancing at school rallies throughout the year, Freshman Orientation, Back To School Night, all home football games, basketball games, the Festival of Dance on Nov. 22 and the annual end of the year show, the team also participates in several community events.

The team danced at the Football Breakfast Bash Sept. 6, a fundraiser for the football team. They will dance and have a bake sale booth at Lombardi Ranch on Oct. 25, sa a fundraiser for the dance team. The team will also hold the annual dance clinic in November.

In addition to attending other competitions, the team will be first time hosts for the USA Regionals competition at Saugus High School on Feb. 28.
