Pysanky are Ukrainian Easter eggs crafted by using the wax and dye method. The beautifully decorated eggs are an ancient tradition customarily passed on by mothers to daughters each year a few weeks prior to Easter.

On April 3, St. Stephen’s Episcopal church in Valencia will hold the fourth annual Pysanky making class in Spurling Hall.

Artists Barbara Wampole and Olga Kaczmar will be the instructors.

The class is free and open to all interested individuals.

To participate in the class, students are instructed to bring a dozen or half-dozen raw, room-temperature eggs.

It is important the eggs be room temperature, because the wax won’t adhere to chilled eggs.

All necessary utensils and tools for applying the wax will be provided.

Individuals who have their own tools and utensils are encouraged to bring them to the class.

“Not only is Pysanky fun, creative and very social, it is meditative and has a spiritual quality for the Lenten season,” said Rev. Lynn Jay, Rector at St. Stephen’s.

The topics to be covered in the class include:

-Why Pysanky have transcended time for religious rituals and for gifts

-Tool demonstration
-Dye explanation
-Penciling in a pattern
-The waxing process.
-Dying the egg at each sequence after waxing
-Removing the wax

Participants are encouraged to make reservations.

The class continues to grow in popularity and seating is limited.
