Amgen Tour names Santa Clarita host city, calls for volunteers

The 2011 Amgen Tour of California professional cycling race revealed its route details last week, listing the city of Santa Clarita as one of 15 host cities and the starting location for the eighth and final stage, set for May 22 at the Valencia Town Center.

The sixth annual race will take place over eight consecutive days from May 15-22, and cover more than 800 miles of scenic California roadways, highways and coastlines. It is the largest cycling event in America.

The Amgen Tour has also opened online registration for volunteers. As many as 450 local volunteers are needed to help staff the race.

Volunteer registration is available at Positions include:

Course Marshals - Course Marshals are assigned a designated area along the race course to assist with the coordination and safety of the field of play for all race venues. Course Marshals will assist with keeping the course clear of pedestrians, spectators, cars, etc., and will keep spectators informed while the race is in progress.

Media - Media volunteers in "start cities" will assist with the distribution of media credentials at media check-in. Volunteers in "finish cities" will assist tour media operations staff in the media office, including credential distribution, serving as "runners," and assisting with general Q&A and office set-up.

Security - Security volunteers will assist Tour Security Staff with access-control, including on-course, hospitality, awards, green rooms and press conferences. Security volunteers will receive a special security T-shirt.

Volunteer Check-in - Check-in Volunteers will assist LOC Volunteer Coordinator with set-up, check-in/registration and deployment.

The majority of volunteers are needed to serve as volunteer course marshals, providing support for the 75 professional course marshals that travel with the tour and support the local law enforcement authorities in each city.

Volunteers must be over the age of 18 or accompanied by an adult. The online sign-up form offers volunteers the opportunity to rank their top-three job preferences, and every attempt is made to match volunteers to their area of interest. Shortly after filling out the online form, volunteers will be contacted by the local organizing committee for further information.

Considered cycling's most important and successful stage race in the United States, and one of the most anticipated professional cycling races in the world, the 2011 Amgen Tour of California is staged over a challenging route showcasing some of the state's most scenic and historical areas.

* Stage 3: Tuesday, May 17 - Auburn to Modesto
* Stage 4, Presented by UnitedHealthcare: Wednesday, May 18 - Livermore to San Jose
* Stage 5, Presented by Rabobank: Thursday, May 19 - Seaside to Paso Robles
* Stage 6, Presented by Herbalife: Friday, May 20 - Solvang Individual Time Trial
* Stage 7, Presented by Nissan: Saturday, May 21 - Claremont to Mt. Baldy
* Stage 8, Presented by Amgen: Sunday, May 22 - Santa Clarita to Thousand Oaks
