Welcome to Jack and Jill of America, Inc.
Welcome to the new members of the Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Santa Clarita Valley/Antelope Valley chapter. I was thrilled to attend the elegant installation ceremony held last weekend at the Hyatt Valencia. Kudos to the club which, after more than a year in the making, graduated from provisional to full chapter status. The ladies were brilliantly attired in all white, from their shoes to their pearls! What a pretty picture! Founding club members include: Schuyler Bacon, Melva Benoit, Andrea Best, Patricia Cannon, Shelitta Castille-Thompson, Lisa Chevalier, Danielle Cooper, Paulette Cooper, Veronica DeLeon, Gwendolyn Ferrell, Maya Goodwin, Claudia Hawkins, Cerene Howard, Kimberly Hudson, Kimberly Humphries, Lola James, Ebony Macon-Johnson, Diane Jones, Michelle Keller, Florence Lankford, Jeryl Montgomery, Sharon Nunn, Sara Rex, Lynette Runnels, Katrina Schauble, Kathy Shank, Eboni Shields, Paula Scott, Charron Smith, Sheree Spencer, Sonya Spurlock, Diiehma Thompson, Katherine Tolliver and Andrea Tyndale.

State of the City
The annual State of the City luncheon in the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt Valencia was packed to the rafters, with standing room only, as city leaders recounted the accomplishments of the past year and looked to the future. The upbeat luncheon attracted the who’s who of the SCV.

Kudos to Glen Sherman, Hoefflin Foundation supporter
The biggest supporter of the Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Children’s Cancer at the Sept. 6 “Evening Under the Stars” event was Glen Sherman who purchased the head table for the 2009 Evening Under the Stars. The very generous gentleman bid $11,000 for the honor. It’s wonderful people like Glen Sherman who make the SCV such a special place! I was impressed with all of the generous donors who contributed their time and their money to this special Foundation.

Looking after nature
Ian Swift, superintendent of Placerita Nature Center and Dianne Erskine-Hellrigel from the Community Hiking Club, both wilderness advocates from the SCV, recently headed to Washington, D.C. to attend Wilderness Week. Wilderness Week was a four day gathering of wilderness supporters from around the country aimed at raising awareness of the nation’s public wild lands and the need to protect them for future generations to use and enjoy. I’m looking forward to hearing all about it!

Cool classic in the SCV
The Repertory East Playhouse offers up John Steinbeck’s literary classic “Of Mice and Men” on stage in Newhall through Oct. 18. The opening night gala sponsored by Travel Center Santa Clarita with wine and food sponsored by Loose Goose Wine Festival and RSVP Catering attracted a nice crowd, including Jerry Lench and Shirley Shinn. Lench’s son, Dan, is on the REP board. The REP will host a post show discussion on Sept. 28 immediately following the show. Join the cast and crew for an intimate discussion about the process of creating live theater. Show times for “Of Mice and Men” are Friday and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $17/$15. For tickets, purchase online at or call (661) 288-0000. The REP is located at 24266 Main St. in Newhall.
