Since we know that aging is an ongoing process, it makes sense to examine the many contributors.
By doing so, we can implement numerous methods to prevent premature aging, and even enhance anti-aging, with the appropriate lifestyle modifications, treatments and products.

Dead-skin buildup

Each one of us produces millions of dead skin cells daily on our face. It is virtually impossible to effectively remove these cells with routine cleansing.

Therefore, introducing a gentle exfoliating scrub one to two times a week will help with the process. Since dead skin cells build up keratinization, or accumulative creasing and wrinkling of skin over the long term, gentle, consistent exfoliation will illuminate the skin and provide a more even skin tone.

Additionally, your skin will receive a message to produce fresh new skin cells after exfoliation.

Professional peels by a license qualified aesthetician or dermatologist, monthly or quarterly, are also recommended for several reasons. The exfoliation of the dead-skin layer will not only smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, it will allow for better absorption of moisturizers, serums, concentrates and other quality products deeper into the skin.

I have frequently discussed the significant negative effects of stress in previous columns.

My message is always to take care of yourself, whether it’s getting a massage, a facial, a manicure or pedicure — or to practice yoga, meditation or whatever it is you need to relax and recharge yourself.

UVA/UVB sun exposure
Even in the winter months, one should always wear sunscreen. UVA/UVB rays from the sun are second only to stress in the battle of age prevention.

UVA rays cause photo aging and broken capillaries, which will lie deep within the skin for years before presenting itself visibly.

This also increases loss of elasticity and impairs synthesis of collagen.

UVB rays will burn your skin if not protected, even for a short length of time.

Choose sunscreen that is broad-spectrum protection, water-resistant and at least an SPF of 30.

Always apply sunscreen 30 minutes prior to sun exposure and if staying out in the sun, reapply it every hour or as recommended by your physician.

 If you are counting on makeup to protect you, don’t. 

The sunscreen in cosmetics has an efficacy rate of at least 50-percent less than the listed SPF.

Loss of elasticity
It’s only natural to lose elasticity over time, but what I bet you didn’t know is that sugar is a major contributor to this process.

This is one of many good reasons to give up sugar altogether or enjoy it in moderation. A nice alternative for coffee, and even baking, is organic stevia. It tastes great, has zero calories and has none of the negative effects of sugar.

Loss of fat
This is a tough one, especially if you are naturally lean, have had a great deal of weight loss in a short time or are over 35 or 40 years of age.

So are expression lines, which are caused by smiling widely, animation while speaking and even sleeping at night.

Medical fillers available at your dermatologist or plastic surgeon’s office such as Perlane, Restylane or even your own body fat can be injected to plump the skin to a more youthful appearance.

Similar results can be achieved with photo or laser facials.

These modalities have the added benefit of removing brown spots and broken capillaries by “burning” them out of the skin.

So many of these procedures are available, it’s wise to make a consultation appointment at your dermatologist or plastic surgeon’s office to determine the best option.

For various reasons, not everyone is a candidate for such treatments.

Expression lines
As time marches on, so do the effects of gravity on your face. Recent studies show that addressing skin tone, circulation and stimulation of the skin through facial treatments such as micro current, ultrasound, ultrasonic or far infrared, are among the best ways to keeping skin toned.

If any of these techniques seem a bit extreme, you can also choose to purchase professional skin care products that have results-targeted, nontoxic ingredients that reduce redness, calm and strengthen capillaries, fade brown spots and even out skin tone.

There are moisturizers available with natural ingredients that plump up the skin when absorbed.

Anti-aging ingredients to look for include:

Resveratrol — A powerful antioxidant derived from red grapes
Hyaluronic acid — Holds moisture and plumps the skin
Retinol — Vitamin A at its purest form, it reduces fine lines and rejuvenates the skin
Peptides — Smoothes the skin and inhibits muscle contraction
Vitamin C — Repairs sun damage and boosts collagen production

Whatever you decide to do when it comes to your skin, my advice is get started today.
