A person intentionally set themselves on fire, drove their vehicle off a cliff on Lake Hughes Road and plummeted about 1,000 feet in an alleged failed suicide attempt Friday morning, authorities said Friday.

The person’s name, age, sex and the extent of their injuries were not immediately available at 5:40 p.m., Sgt. Brian Allen of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said.

Allen said that the person may have lived outside of Los Angeles County and had been reported missing.

The person drove over a cliff off Lake Hughes about two miles north of Dry Gulch Road and five miles east of Interstate 5, said Inspector Matt Levesque of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

A helicopter airlifted the person from the crash site to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center at 11:06 a.m., Levesque said.

Authorities arrived at the crash site after a person driving on Lake Hughes spotted a fire at about 10:30 a.m., he said.
