St. Stephen's wrong to ordain openly gay priest

I was troubled to read in The Signal’s Saturday, Feb. 26 article, “Faith callings finally realized” that St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church ordained an openly unrepentant lesbian woman who is quoted in the article as saying: “You don’t need to be ordained or espouse a specific faith community, we are all connected by who we are and the energy that surrounds.”

Not only does Cynthia Jew deny the Christian faith by her sinful lifestyle (Matthew 5:27-28; Romans 1:26-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; 1 Timothy 1:8-11; Revelation 21:8), she denies the Christian faith with her words.

It most certainly does matter, according to the word of God, if people espouse a faith other than faith in Jesus Christ. For “there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

I was further dismayed when I saw that the ceremony to install the new priests included a Chinese Lion Dance. The image in the paper of the Chinese lion, with its many colors and exaggerated large eyes, is of the Southern Chinese tradition. These particular lions and the associated dances are used in Chinese culture to exorcise evil spirits and to summon good luck from their gods.

In the church’s apparent effort to be multicultural and inclusive, it conducted a ceremony not unlike Aaron’s formation of the golden calf (Exodus 32:1-24). And God is no less pleased with the idolatry that took place in the church that day than he was all those years ago at the base of Mount Sinai.

My heart breaks for the church’s present spiritual condition. My hope and prayer is that the church will repent of its idolatry and promotion of a false gospel and return to the message of salvation by the grace of God alone, through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone.
