One man’s five-year search to find the rightful owner of $15,000 in U.S. savings bonds found near the Santa Clara River is coming to a close today after Signal readers responded to a published report of his discovery.

At least two Signal readers called the newspaper Monday with information about Kenneth Dare Royce — the man whom Rick Steinbruecker has been trying to find since he found savings bonds in a discarded filing cabinet at the western end of Santa Clara Street.

Kenneth Dare Royce, 50, lives in Santa Barbara, according to both readers.

On Monday, one of the two readers said he phoned Royce that morning to confirm he’s still living in Santa Barbara.

“I spoke to him today, and he’s doing fine,” said the reader, who spoke to The Signal on the condition he not be identified.
The reader confirmed, however, that he is in a position to know of Royce’s whereabouts.

Steinbruecker said he is excited about the prospect of putting the recovered savings bonds into the hands of the man who is rightfully entitled to them.

The U.S. savings bonds bear the names of Wilbur Royce and his wife, Joan, of Santa Barbara.

Steinbruecker determined early in his search that the couple’s next of kin is their son Kenneth Dare Royce, born in Marin County on Feb. 28, 1961.

The mystery man’s mother died in 1996 and his father two years after that.

Steinbruecker began looking for Royce five years ago after he found a discarded four-drawer metal filing cabinet, which was empty except for one drawer.

Inside the cabinet, he found several personal and official papers belonging to the Royce family, including legal notices, Social Security cards and photographs.

The reader, who said he spoke to Royce but did not mention the savings bonds, is expected to arrange a meeting between Royce and Steinbruecker.
