Golden Valley knocks off Santa Paula, earns first winning record

Maybe there's a changing of the guard, or a new sheriff in town or just a whole new world. But whatever is going on, the Golden Valley Grizzlies seem to be the recipient of some pretty good things.

For now, at least.

For the first time in its short varsity gridiron history, the Grizzlies (2-1) have a winning record after tough 21-13 victory over Santa Paula on the road Friday evening.

Down 13-0 in the first half, Golden Valley stormed back as receiver John Schlegel scored late in the first on a 15-yard toss from quarterback Jimmie Hughes; and again as time expired in the half on a five-yard reception.

Early in the fourth, it was Hughes going in from the 1 on a sneak that put the club up for the first time. The Grizzlies defense then did the rest, holding their 1-2 foes out of the end zone for the rest of the contest.

"The Santa Paula quarterback was very quick," said Golden Valley head coach Steve Pinkston, "but we began making adjustments. In the second half we began to contain him, and when we did good things began to happen."

Coming up big on the D side was Schlegel, who knocked down three straight passes late in the contest; cornerback Bino Horne, who had an outstanding game; and DE Joseph Figueroa, who came up with a huge interception in the fourth quarter.

"I think this team is really maturing," added Pinkston. "We're starting to control the line of scrimmage and making big third down plays on defense."
