A known gang member was arrested Saturday morning after being shot in the hand and back by an unknown suspect in Canyon Country, sheriff’s records revealed Monday.

Vincent Villa, 21, of Sylmar, was in critical but stable condition when he was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital between 1 and 2 a.m. Saturday after being shot in the hand and back, Sgt. Mike Konecny said.

Villa was arrested at 7:30 a.m. Saturday “for being a gang member in possession of a loaded firearm,” Lt. Brenda Cambra of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station said in an email Monday.

That’s a felony charge.

“Patrol deputies contacted the suspect on (Saturday) at 1:20 a.m. in the 20700 block of Soledad Canyon,” Cambra wrote. “They located a loaded semi-automatic pistol in his car. He was identified as a known gang member.”

The shooting took place on the same block in Canyon Country, according to sheriff’s Lt. Steve Lowe.

As of Monday, Villa was being held at county jail on $35,000 bail.

Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s detectives are investigating the shooting. The shooting suspect faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder.

Anyone with details is asked to call the Sheriff’s Station at (661) 255-1121.
