Sponsor Providence Medical Center is proud to present the judges for the Santa Clarita Valley Youth Project's third annual Sweet Charity Cake Auction & Competition, set for 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 9 at the Tournament Players Club in Valencia.

Jim Moret is a chief correspondent for Inside Edition. Based in Los Angeles, Moret covers human interest stories as well as high-profile celebrity news stories.

Before joining Inside Edition, the veteran journalist was with CNN for nearly a decade, serving as co-anchor of the long-running "Showbiz Today," as well as co-anchor of CNN's main newscast, "The World Today," and anchor of CNN's "NewsNight."

Moret's inspirational memoir, "The Last Day of My Life," is his first book and has landed him appearances on "Dr. Phil," "Today," "Joy Behar" and numerous other television and radio shows.

Chef David Lawrence is the host and creative food director of the hit web cooking series "Good Bite," the author of the popular food blog "Forking Delicious" and his latest cookbook, "Boy Eats World! A Private Chef Cooks Simple Gourmet."

David's refreshing, often humorous style and easy to follow recipes will help even the most timid cook feel like a kitchen rock star. His first cookbook, "KidShape Café," was published in 2005.

Cindy Schwanke is a full-time culinary instructor at College of the Canyons. She has helped develop the culinary program into a well-respected, competitive culinary establishment. She has hosted various cooking workshops, community service projects and fundraisers to promote the college and the culinary program.

Schwanke has worked at Hyatt Hotels, Four Seasons Hotel, Smash Box Studios, Spago restaurant and retail outlets and has a degree in Culinary Food Management. Her specialty is pastry and has won numerous medals in pastry competitions.

And lastly, the owners of the famous Porto's Bakery & Café, siblings Margarita and Raul Jr. Porto, will also join the judging panel. For more than 30 years, the Porto family has impressed people with their incredibly delicious and beautifully designed cakes and desserts.

"People wait in lines to get into their bakery," said SCVYP Board Member Renee Kaehny.

"It should be a great night. We have great new sponsorships and we're continuing to see such excitement among the community members," said Kim Goldman, for the SCV Youth Project. "Having Jim, Chef David and Cindy is going to add some spice to the night. It will surely make for a memorable evening.

"And as always, the young people are coming out to compete," Goldman.said. "We have a third-time entry from 11-year-old Kiora Sanchez of Bubblegum Bakery and a second-time entry from 16-year-old Chelsea Ashburn of Crave Bakehouse. Can't wait to see what they come up with this time."

The event will also showcase musical group Thelonius Dub, featuring Santa Clarita's own Lindsay Hough.

With an emphasis on building a fun and creative way to promote local companies, charities and schools, all are invited to design a specialty cake to promote their business, mission, logo, product or mascot.

Cakes will be put on display for viewing and paired with unique gifts (trips, baskets, gift certificates, etc.), creating an innovative and valuable auction item.

Cakes are awarded prizes in several categories, including originality and creativity, as well as the cake that raises the most money. The auction and judging will take place at a "cake-tail" reception at TPC at Valencia.

"There is still time to get your tickets. For just $40, there couldn't be a better, more creative option to spend a Saturday night with or without the kids," said co-chairs Jeri Goldman of KHTS AM-1220 and Renee Kaehny of Rituals Colour Salon.

The Santa Clarita Valley Youth Project is celebrating 10 years of successfully providing free services to teens in the SCV. Since its doors opened in 2000, the Youth Project has assisted more than 32,000 local families, including 27,000 youth and 5,500 adults.

In 2008-2009, with services provided on the campuses of six high schools and seven junior high schools, the SCV Youth Project provided more than 2,000 hours of service to thousands of young adults in the Santa Clarita Valley with serious life challenges, including depression, suicide, grief/loss, peer pressure and drug/alcohol abuse.

Tickets cost $40. Sponsorships are available and range from $100 to $10,000.

The Tournament Players Club is located at 26550 Heritage View Lane, Stevenson Ranch 91381.
