Valencia softball entered its game against West Ranch as the No. 4 team in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll.

That didn’t phase the Wildcats, who capitalized on a potential loss bigger than one game.

West Ranch’s Kylie Sorenson and Lauren Lindvall hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning to key a 7-6 win over the Vikings, who lost standout pitcher Carly Mortensen to a forearm injury on Thursday at Valencia High.

“This was the first time that we beat Valencia in the history of our program,” said Wildcats head coach Bob Shults.

Mortensen left the game in the sixth inning after suffering pain in her pitching arm.

She is expected to be evaluated today.

“We still control our own destiny,” said Vikings head coach Donna Lee, who described Mortensen’s condition. “A lot of pain. She couldn’t grip the ball. She had tingling in her fingers. Obviously, (pulling her) was more important than the ‘W.’”

Nicole Miller took over for the junior and was strong until the final out of the seventh when Sorenson and Lindvall each homered.

Mortensen had seven strikeouts and gave up four earned runs before leaving, and West Ranch (13-5, 1-1) held a 5-4 lead.

The Vikings (15-2, 1-1) scored two runs in the sixth to take the lead.

Sorenson finished 2-for-4, Lindvall was 2-for-4 with a double, Janelle Lindvall batted 2-for-3 with a two-run home run.

Bailey Foster pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts, three walks, four earned runs and seven hits.

Bethany Kemp went 3-for-4 with three RBIs for Valencia, Sarah Solano went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and Andrea Brackpool finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
