Hart board eyes volunteering issues

Hart district board members will discuss revising the board policies and administrative regulations regarding volunteers on school campuses at Wednesday's meeting.

Board President Gloria Mercado-Fortine suggested the policy be changed last spring after LAPD officers arrested Canyon High School volunteer football coach Kevin Thomas for allegedly sexually assaulting female students in the San Fernando Valley.

Four William S. Hart Union High School District students came forward recently to say they were also assaulted by Thomas.

The girls were allegedly assaulted during private basketball training sessions provided by Thomas.

Thomas was not a volunteer basketball coach for the Hart district, nor was he employed by the district.

Rochelle Neal, assistant superintendant of human resources and student services, worked on revising the volunteer policy for some time and will present it to the board Wednesday for a first reading.
