Grace Baptist Church held its annual Free Garage Sale on April 16, giving needy families a chance to take home furniture and home supplies.

In its fourth year, the Free Garage Sale offered donated furniture and appliances to needy families of the Santa Clarita Valley, along with spiritual support and information about Christianity.

This year, scores of Grace volunteers served more than 125 families from the community, many of them lining up on the church driveway well before sunrise.

Once registered, guests were ushered into a hospitality room to make the acquaintance of volunteer table hosts from the church.

When their turn came, guests were accompanied by a personal shopper to select the item of furniture or the appliance needed for their home.

The church parking lot was turned into a temporary furniture warehouse for the day, with hundreds of items available. All items had been donated to the event by members of the church, and several of them made trucks available for home delivery.

Grace’s Care Pastor Dan Fetters was glad to see the generous response of the church members.

“When Christ-followers are willing to consider our personal possessions as gifts from God, it makes sense when we give those same possessions away to someone who needs to draw the same conclusion,” he said.

Food Pantry Coordinator Sheri Stimson agreed.

“This gesture is intended to serve as a tangible picture of God’s kindness, love and forgiveness to each of us,” she said.

“We find no greater joy than knowing we have been used by God to express his truth and goodness to others in meaningful ways.”

A similar event is scheduled for May 21, the date of Grace’s semi-annual Open Food Pantry. At that time, groceries and frozen goods will be made available to those in need. Contact the church at (661) 296-8737 for details or visit
