The Valencia softball team hadn't lost three Foothill League games in a season since 2000.

Canyon made sure to change that on Tuesday.

Hayley Bottino scored pinch runner Kaelie Doyle, and Cowboys starting pitcher Leanne Hill shut out the 10-time defending league-champion Vikings for the first time all season with a 1-0 win in eight innings at Canyon High School.

"For us, this is a huge boost," said Canyon head coach Dwain Whalen. "We told the girls, ‘You just put yourselves back in the race. You came out hot against Hart and faltered for three games. Then you responded.' These girls can be as good as they want."

Doyle was running in place of catcher Courtney Ziese, who finished 2-for-4 and was intentionally walked with two outs in bottom of the eighth.

Bottino then doubled into the right-center field gap with two strikes, plating Doyle and giving Canyon (12-9, 2-3) the win.

Hill pitched a complete game, striking out one and giving up eight hits.

Carly Mortensen started for Valencia (17-4, 2-3) for the first time in three games while recovering from inflammation in her throwing arm.

Mortensen pitched 2 2/3 innings with two hits and five strikeouts before giving way to sophomore Sydney Mundell, who only allowed one hit with four strikeouts.

"She wanted to see if she could go. She threw one pitch the wrong way and it hurt," said Vikings head coach Donna Lee of Mortensen. "We had runners in scoring position, we just couldn't get the big hit. It's that simple. ... We are taking it one day at a time. I still believe in these girls."

Both teams are now tied for fourth place in league, two games behind first-place Saugus, and one back of second-place Hart and West Ranch.

Canyon takes on the Indians on Thursday, while Valencia plays at Golden Valley.
