Business teachers Geoffrey Aronsky at La Mesa Junior High School and Linda Cox at West Ranch High School have involved their students in the Stock Market Game as a way for students to learn about financial markets. Students from both schools recently participated in a 15-week game and did exceptionally well.

Teams from West Ranch placed first, second and third place this spring, and a team from La Mesa placed third of all junior high schools in the county this past fall. At West Ranch, the winners of the 15-week competition were Ciera Baker and Madison Pancake (first), Sagar Choudhary and Hunter Hineman (second) and Connor McClafferty and Nedal Zayyad (third place). In the yearlong category, Perry Roberts and Johnny Sanders won third place.

In building a portfolio, students researched and evaluated stocks and make decisions based on what they’ve learned. Teams trade common stocks from the NYSE, Nasdaq and AMEX exchanges, earn interest on cash balances, pay interest if buying on margin and pay a commission on all trades.
