The Santa Clarita City Council unanimously approved a plan Tuesday to transform the Pioneer Oil Refinery site into a park.

The city owns the 4.5 acres located off Pine Street in Newhall, where the first commercial oil refinery in California was built in 1876.

The Pioneer Oil Refinery Master Plan, adopted by the council in a unanimous vote during Tuesday night's meeting, will include restoring historically significant buildings and stills, creating walking and hiking paths, relocating the pump house to protect it from flooding, and constructing picnic areas, rest rooms, parking and a trail connection.

There are no plans at this time to begin construction of the park, city spokeswoman Gail Ortiz said.
