The city is accepting bids for a Newhall Metrolink Station parking lot expansion that will include a new play area for the Newhall Community Center.

The project is estimated to cost about $700,000, senior city engineer Hoon Hahn said.

The project is federally funded and could begin this fall. It would be complete as early as January 2012, Hahn said.

About 30 of the 95 spaces would be built as permeable pavement, which means water can penetrate it and be naturally filtered before it reaches the nearby Santa Clara River.

This is the second city project that would include such pavement. It also meets the state's requirement for storm water drainage.

The 95 spaces will be built on vacant land north of the property. The play area, which will be an open field, will be north of the city's community center on Market Street.
