You need to go out of the SCV to find the “art house” theaters. You need to go out of the SCV to find the “art house” theaters.

I think there's a famous quote that goes: "There are no small movies, only small moviegoers." And if there is, I fit the category. You see, my upstate brother recently recommended that I go see the Woody Allen comedy "Midnight in Paris." And the first words out of my mouth were, "Well, I'd have to drive over the hill to do that." This I followed up with, "We don't git no ‘little' movies 'round these parts."

You see, things being what they are in the Santa Clarita Valley, "small" films don't draw in the crowds and so they usually don't make it to our local movie screens. While we occasionally have showings of independent films and foreign films and such here in the SCV - it's usually only after they are nominated for Oscars.

If you fancy yourself an "indie" aficionado, or your movie interests run outside the mainstream, you really do have to drive "over the hill" to the San Fernando Valley and beyond to satisfy your in-theater cravings. So, herein, Escape gives you a glimpse into the small movie world with our listings of the "art house" theaters in the Los Angeles area. And, please, send me no nasty emails because I left your favorite theater out or included one you hate. Everyone has their own opinion on just what makes a great "art" film and where the best places are to see them.

11272 Santa Monica Blvd.
West Los Angeles, CA 90025
(310) 281-8223
Operated by Landmark Theatres since 1974, the Nuart features an eclectic mix of programming. It has been called one of the country's most renowned and prestigious epicenters for independent film, foreign language cinema, documentaries, animation festivals and restored classics. And it also screens major releases, such as "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2."

The Landmark
10850 West Pico Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90064
Showtimes: (310) 281-8233, Information: (310) 470-0492
Also one of the Landmark Theatres, The Landmark offers the same eclectic lineup as the Nuart, with current showings of such films as "Midnight in Paris" and "Crazy, Stupid, Love."

Regent Theatre
1045 Broxton Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90024

Operated by Landmark Theaters since 2002, the Regent Theatre in Westwood offers independent, specialized, foreign and art films as well as more mainstream movies.

Laemmle Theaters
The Laemmle Theaters chain includes eight movie houses. With a click on the "Now Playing" tab at the website, you can find out which movies you can see where. Current showings include films such as "Life in a Day," "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan," "Project Nim" and "Sarah's Key." Of course, you can also see "Friends with Benefits."

New Beverly Cinema
7165 West Beverly Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90036
(323) 938-4038
The New Beverly Cinema is one of Los Angeles' longest running revival theaters. Since 1978, the New Beverly has screened the finest in classic, independent, cult and foreign films. Every paired program is a double feature and all feature films are presented in 35mm.

ArcLight Hollywood at the Cinerama Dome
6360 W. Sunset Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90028
(323) 464-1478
ArcLight operates several large theaters, all providing major releases and a sprinkling of smaller movies, such as "The Devil's Double" or "The Future." The ArcLight in Hollywood, at the Cinerama Dome, provides the most "atmosphere."

Downtown Independent
251 S. Main St.
Los Angeles, CA 90012
(213) 617-1033
This is truly an art house theater, as you won't get any major releases playing here. For example, today's offering (Aug. 5) is "If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front." You won't find that playing in the SCV, pal.
