West Ranch sophomore Haley Lind has limited experience playing varsity volleyball.

That doesn’t mean she’ll come into the 2011 season without experience under pressure.

For the second straight year, Lind was picked for the USA Volleyball Girls’ Select A1 team, a collection of 30 elite 14- and 15-year-old players from around the country.

“It’s really fun and I feel like it’s playing with top girls in the nation and it’s really humbling,” Lind said.

Her team took the bronze medal in a competition that included around 10 teams on July 30 in Tucson, Ariz.

Other teams there came from Mexico, New Zealand and other parts of the country. Many opponents featured teams with players in the 16-17 age group.

“She is basically one of the top liberos in her age group in the country,” said West Ranch head coach Nate Sparks.

Lind, 15, played limited time on varsity last year as a freshman despite the fact that she missed a large portion of summer workouts trying out for and competing for the USA team.

“I had put her on the team without her technically trying out because I had seen her play and I had seen what she could do,” Sparks said.

Once again, Lind comes in late in the game, but Sparks said she’ll be up to speed with the intensity of USA Volleyball.

“I don’t know what to say sometimes,” Lind said of her experience in Tucson. “When I go and I see these teams, it’s weird to think about that they are from these different countries and they’re all playing volleyball all around the world.”

The sophomore has been playing volleyball for the San Fernando Valley-based Santa Monica Beach Club since age 12.

Next summer, when she’ll be 16, she can try out for the next-highest youth level of USA Volleyball.

“I’ll try out as long as I keep making it,” Lind said.
