A young couple is in custody today after their speeding car turned out to be stolen in Hollywood, local sheriff's deputies said.

"When the driver was asked to step out of the car he said, ‘Sorry, the vehicle is stolen,'" Lt. Joe Efflandt of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station said Friday.

About 9 a.m. today, local Deputy Anthony Eagar noticed a car speeding in the area of Via Princessa and stopped it at Claibourne Lane, in the area of Circle J Ranch Road, Efflandt said.

When he approached the driver, the young man behind the wheel apologized and said the car was stolen.

At gunpoint, Eagar ordered the man and his female passenger to stay inside the car and then requested additional units, Efflandt said.

When help arrived, the couple were ordered out of the car.

Deputies confirmed that the green 1997 Honda Civic had been reported stolen in Hollywood on Wednesday and contacted the Los Angeles Police Department.

The 29-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman now face criminal charges.
