To The Editor:

I was compelled to write after reading Dianne Erskine-Hellrigel's commentary in Thursday's Signal ("Quit Trashing Santa Clarita," Feb. 14, 2008). I want to reiterate her strong words and encourage everyone living in this still-beautiful valley to do what they can to help - whether it be picking up trash on our many trails and in our neighborhoods, or reporting illegal dumping and littering.

My husband and I stumbled across the SCV Community Hiking Club last year when they were doing a clean-up in Whitney Canyon. Dianne explained the origins of the trash in this canyon, most of it embedded in layers of dirt over several years. The volume and caliber of dumped items amazed and saddened us.

The SCV Community Hiking Club has many dedicated and wonderful volunteers. Dianne sends out an informative and fun monthly e-mail newsletter that provides a detailed clean-up and hiking events schedule, information on local plants and animals and lots of great photographs of local flora & fauna and volunteers at work. I deeply appreciate the time and energy Dianne and the volunteers put into keeping our community clean and safe for us, the animals and plants.

Last weekend, my husband and I took our first drive ever up Sand Canyon and were impressed by the beauty and openness of the hills as we drove for 12 miles or so. However, it was very disheartening to stop and look out over a ledge, only to see large volumes of dumped items. It disgusts me that anyone would do this kind of trashing to our environment, let alone our planet.

I hope Dianne's commentary reaches at least a handful of "dumpers" who may now think twice, and do the right thing. For those of us who don't litter and want to contribute to maintaining the beauty of Santa Clarita, the SCV Community Hiking Club is a great opportunity to help. Dianne and the volunteers are shining stars in our community!
