Ever wonder what the community will look like 50 years from now? No one knows for sure, but in 50 years, Santa Clarita residents of the future will have a glimpse of local life in 2011.

On Thursday at 10 a.m., the community is invited to attend the Topping Out and Time Capsule Dedication at the library construction site in the heart of Santa Clarita’s revitalized Old Town Newhall.

The ceremony will include an opportunity for guests to sign the steel tower before it is raised up to the top of the structure.

The event will also include the dedication of the community time capsule, which will be buried at the new library site.

Currently under construction, Santa Clarita’s new 30,000-square-foot library is slated for completion in mid-2012.

The two-story LEED-certified building will be the largest of three Santa Clarita libraries and feature state-of-the-art technology, including 74 public-use computers.

The Old Town Newhall library will also feature other amenities including a children’s library, study and community rooms, a fireplace reading room and much more.

At the topping-out ceremony, community members will witness the lifting and placement of the 12-ton steel tower that will be added to the top of the new library.

The tower is a significant element of the Santa Clarita Old Town Newhall Library and will be seen throughout the area once completed.

The tower will feature a distinctive roof form as well as special lighting effects and details, which will link the past of Old Town Newhall to its vibrant and exciting future.

The tower will also house an enchanting children’s program story room within its base.

Now through Wednesday, community members have an opportunity to join the celebration by submitting their treasures to be included in the time capsule.

Submitted items should be small-sized, iconic items of interest that have historical significance or represent everyday life in Santa Clarita in 2011.

Each item must be placed inside a one gallon or smaller zippered plastic bag, accompanied with the name, address and telephone number of the person submitting the item, as well as a short description of the item.

Appropriate 2011 time-capsule items include: books, music, photos, newspapers, magazines, toys, gadgets, signatures of groups of people and children written on something of note.

To submit an item for the time capsule, please drop off your entry at one of five locations:
* Human Resources Office on the first floor of City Hall, located at 23920 Valencia Blvd. (Mon-Fri, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
