This week, our local public schools have once again proven they are exceptional with Wednesday’s release of the statewide Academic Performance Index.

The 2011 numbers, a measure of achievement during the 2010-11 school year, show all five Santa Clarita Valley school districts making gains from the previous year’s scores. The Newhall School District posted an outstanding 903 out of a possible 1,000 points.

No. 2 in the valley, the Saugus Union School District, wasn’t far behind with a score of 876, up from 866 the year before — a 10-point improvement in the midst of education-funding issues in the state. And all of our districts posted at least a five-point improvement from 2010.

The API scores are based on student performance on several state standardized tests; scores range from 200 to 1,000.
This is great news for our schools, our teachers and students — but it’s also good news for everyone who lives in this valley, whether they have kids in school or not.

A testament to the quality of education here in the valley, these scores also show how much we Santa Clarita Valley residents value our own future: Scores this high and point gains this large show the dedication of education policy makers, administrators and teachers, as well as the entire community that supports them.

As positive side effects go, quality schools such as ours make the valley a better place for everyone to live.

Local business groups will be able to use these numbers to help attract companies to relocate here, since the family-friendly environment and the quality of life it implies are big draws for businesses, and that creates jobs and a healthier local economy.

And numbers such as these are also not missed by real estate agents. They keep property values high, which also gives a vital boost to our economic prosperity.

A well-educated workforce means a higher standard of living, which is a benefit to all residents.

In short, everyone benefits when we invest in our children.

So many kudos are due to our outstanding teachers, school administrators, involved parents, community support and, of course, the students.

Here’s to another year of valleywide excellence.
