Smyth hosts fire victims recovery meeting

Assemblyman Cameron Smyth (R-Santa Clarita) will host a fire recovery meeting for residents affected by the Marek and Sesnon fires at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the North Valley City Hall, 7747 Foothill Boulevard in Tujunga.

"I am coordinating this event in order to provide residents who were devastated by these fires useful and important information to aid in the recovery process," Smyth said.

Representatives from state and local agencies, including the state Office of Emergency Services and the Department of Housing and Community Development, Los Angeles Council Member Wendy Greuel and Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich will join Smyth at the meeting.

Underwater pumpkin carving contest Saturday

The city hosts an "Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest" at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center, 20850 Centre Pointe Parkway. Admission is free. The contest features teams of scuba divers carving pumpkins 12 feet underwater. Call (661) 286-4088 to register or for more information.

Street sweeping once a week

With the start of the fall season, the city changed its street sweeping schedule from every other week to every week. The street sweeping will take place every week between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Residents are asked to remove vehicles, debris and basketball courts from the streets during scheduled street sweeping days. The street sweeping returns to the bi-weekly schedule in January 2009.

City transit launches text message service

The city's transit service launched U-text, a text messaging service that allows commuters to subscribe and receive mobile phone text alerts when there are urgent changes to a commuter route. To subscribe to U-text, send a keyword text message to 41411, select the commuter route you want, and begin receiving urgent commuter text updates from city transit.

Friday fundraiser for Fierro family

The MOMS Club of Saugus hosts a fundraiser for the Fierro family from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at the Lombardi Ranch Bake Shack in Saugus. Two-year-old Jacob Fierro died on Friday after his battle with leukemia. The fundraiser is designed to help the Fierro family with their finances. Lombardi Ranch is at 29527 Bouquet Canyon Road.
