City of L.A. Right on Newhall Ranch

To The Editor:

Although I rarely agree with the position that the L.A. City Council takes on most issues, their stance on the Newhall Ranch project makes a lot of sense to me.

Even from their distant vantage point, they understand the impact this will have on an already traffic-saturated Newhall Pass during rush hour. They probably also know that there is no practical way to alleviate this congestion in the next 20 years. That was my first thought when I became aware of this project many years ago.

The idea that all or even most of the new residents of this community will also work locally is so preposterous that I am surprised that any informed person could make that suggestion. I am a college graduate who has been trying to find a local job for over 15 years that pays at a head-of-household level, and have not been successful.

If I was the only one in this situation, why are there so many cars on I-5 from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. every weekday morning going south? Where are all of the jobs that are going to be given to new residents? Are they just going to be created for purchasers of homes in the Newhall Ranch project?

Although our city council has remained mostly silent on this issue, maybe it is time they considered the effect this project will have on the quality of life in the Santa Clarita Valley. If nothing else, they need to consider the additional time spent on the road by the primary breadwinner in each household, and away from his or her family.
