County supervisors on Tuesday approved the first phase of a regional sports complex in Castaic.

Tuesday's decision means a $9.6 million contract with Perera Construction & Design Inc. goes into effect to build the first phase of a state-of the-art aquatic center at the Castaic Regional Sports Complex.

Perera designed and built the Olive View Medical Center in Sylmar and the Town Center Community Park Aquatic Center & YMCA in Santee, near San Diego, which opened a year ago and features two Olympic-sized pools, a bath house and gymnastic center.

Scott Wardle of Castaic Town Council said the Castaic complex could be ready in two years.

"Castaic residents could start the summer of 2013 with a public swimming pool complex on a par with the city of Santa Clarita's Aquatics Center," Wardle said in an email sent to The Signal prior to the supervisors meeting Tuesday.

The complex is slated to be built on 3.5 acres of vacant county-owned land on Castaic Road between the county's Department of Parks and Recreation building and the Days Inn Motel.

It is expected to include a 25-meter Olympic-sized recreational swimming pool for competitive swim training, a shallow 21-foot by 75-foot wading pool and a "splash pad" with water features.

The plans call for a 12,500-square-foot pool building and recreation office with restrooms, changing rooms, staff offices and utility rooms, all laid out with granite walkways and a 65-car parking lot.

When Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich unveiled the project in June, he called it "a world-class pool project."

Phase 1 will take approximately 20 months to build and is scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2013.

Operated by county Department of Parks and Recreation, the complex will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; hours may be extended for special events and private parties.
