Let’s play Cowboys and Indians

Canyon looks for revenge over Hart in 41st meeting at COC

A half-second.

That was all it took last season for Hart to defeat Canyon.

Johnny "Crazy Legs" MacArthur's 43-yard field goal solidified Hart in the race for the Foothill League title.

It was the Indians' first win in four games against the Cowboys.

Now the two teams reunite at 7:30 p.m. tonight at College of the Canyons in what will likely be a much different scenario.

The make-up of each squad is significantly different. Each team is under the helm of new quarterbacks-Spenser Souza for Hart and Jordan Adamczyk for Canyon.

Last season, the Indians entered the contest against Canyon 6-0; this season the team enters 2-4.

This much-anticicapted contest between two cross-town rivals will be the team's 41st meeting, with Hart leading the series 25-15.

"We have a lot of guys in the junior class that have stepped up," Souza said. "We're going to come out fired up on all cylinders."

In six games, Souza has rushed for 258 yards on 102 carries. The 6-foot-1 signal caller has passed for 967 yards.

Canyon (3-3) showed defensive lapses in its loss to Valencia last Friday night.

Adamczyk said the team put particular focus in practice this week on filling those defensive gaps.

"It's always a great matchup with Hart," Adamczyk said. "We're fired up to play."

Adamczyk is currently leading the Foothill League in passing yards (1,536), followed by Souza in second.

Offensively, the Indians will need standout performances from running back Jake Stephens, who leads the Hart team in rushing yards with 538, and Demitri Diamond who recently returned to the line-up after being sidelined from a shoulder injury.

The usual corps of receivers will be in action for Canyon. Chris Rivas, who suffered a concussion in the second quarter on Friday, will be back in full form. Senior Kevin Voogt, who had his best showing so far this season against Valencia with 15 receptions, will likely be a favorite target for Adamczyk.

"It's going to be a great matchup," he said.

Saugus (3-3) vs. West Ranch (2-4)
The Centurions are still charged up after their first win over the Indians in 16 years last Friday night. The team will carry that momentum into its matchup with West Ranch tonight at 7 p.m. at Valencia High.

Last season, Saugus held the Wildcats to just one touchdown. This year's contest could have the same outcome.

West Ranch struggled in its nonleague schedule, losing four consecutive games.

The team did see a light at the end of the tunnel with a win over Golden Valley last Friday in its season opener.

However, with injured cornerback Ross Bacon still out of the Wildcats' lineup, the team will have a tough time competing with the Centurions' formidable offense.

Led by quarterback Desi Rodriguez, who is second in league in rushing yards (825) and points scored (68), and running back Ryan Zirbel, Saugus will be an arduous team for the Wildcats to overcome.

Valencia (5-1) vs. Golden Valley (3-3)
With one team struggling to win and the other on a winning streak, this game is sure to be in favor of the latter.

Valencia will face Golden Valley at Canyon High at 7 p.m.

The Vikings have proven to be a powerhouse in the Foothill League with its deep corps of offensive weapons.

Valencia has also demonstrated it has the defensive prowess to overcome a very competitive league lineup as well.

The key for the Grizzlies' defense will be formulating a plan to stop running back Jordan Thompson.

However, it's not likely Golden Valley will be able to put a halt to Thompson's dominance.

Every team that has faced the Vikings so far have been unsuccessful. Thompson leads the league in rushing yards, accumulating 899 yards on 128 carries.

Golden Valley did not score any points in its matchup last week against West Ranch.

Should the Grizzlies get on the board in this contest, it will prove to the rest of the teams in their league they are capable of being contenders.
