Senior Lunch Menu

Available Monday through Friday at the SCV Senior Center in Newhall. Meals are also available when you call one day ahead at Bouquet Canyon Seniors, Monday through Friday, (661) 513-9479, and available Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at the Masonic Lodge in Friendly Valley (661) 299-4595.

Oct. 5: “The benefits of pet ownership” with Kyle Harris of Castaic Shelter and a reading of “Pit Stops: Crossing the Country with Loren the Rescue Bully” with author Michelle Sathe. Special appearance by “Pit Stops” book tour bully breed ambassador Kara.

Oct. 12: Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital Breast Health Navigator Mindy Burgess, R.N., presents “Breast cancer awareness facts you should know”. Women and men are encouraged to attend.

Oct. 12: Diabetes clinic with Lori Robinson, registered dietitian, who will provide free glucose testing in the Supportive Services modular from 11 a.m.-noon. Minimum four-hour fast before test required.

Oct. 19: Los Angeles County Dept. of Mental Health Professionals will present “Older adults, substance abuse and mental wellness”. Learn how substances affect the body and emotional well-being, how over-the-counter drugs may interact with prescription drugs and why medication adherence is so crucial.

Oct. 26: Facey Medical Group Patient Educator Paul Davis will present “Know your Medicare options”.

Oct. 27: Audiology Associates will provide free hearing exams in the Supportive Services modular, from 11 a.m.-noon. Exams are for people who do not wear hearing aids, however, all hearing-related questions are welcome.

Healthy and nutritious cooking classes

Registered dietitian Stephanie Correnti is back with taste-bud, pocketbook and vitality-conscious cooking lessons, six class series on Fridays beginning Oct. 28 through Dec. 2 (no class on Nov. 25), class includes cooking demos and food samples. Classes are free (sponsored by the ENHANCE program of the Los County Area on Aging IIID Funds for Health Promotion/Disease Prevention). Limited seating, registration required. Free spine education program

Free flu shots

Functional fitness

At 8:30 a.m. M-W-F, we’re movin’ and groovin’, steppin’ and sweatin’ to the beat with ACE Certified Exercise Specialist Linda Bennett.

We’re the new and improved “middle age” 50-plus active adults. The program encompasses functional fitness — moves are designed to simulate ADLs (activities of daily living), and sports moves like golf, tennis, and skiing. We do cardiovascular training, muscle and bone building, core stabilization, and spatial awareness for balance — all within one hour. If you’re not quite ready for the fast and furious fitness, at 9:45 a.m. there is a great 30-minute chair class that will suit you. Food for the soul

Put smiles on the faces and warm the hearts of homebound seniors when you become a home-delivered meal driver. Become a part of our volunteer team to ensure that no senior goes without a meal. Help is desperately needed for as little as two and one-half hours one day a week or even one day a month (Monday through Friday, 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m.). Vehicles provided.
