The Foothill League’s six cross country teams traveled to Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday to take part in the 64th annual Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational.

The event is routinely regarded as one of the largest meets in the nation and was highlighted by the Saugus girls team’s first-place finish.

The Saugus and Golden Valley squads opted to participate in sweepstakes races, which offer a higher level of competition.
“Obviously more competitive,” said Saugus head coach Rene Paragas of why teams choose to run in the sweepstakes races. “You put yourself against tougher competition to prepare them for the postseason.”

In its sweepstakes race, the Saugus girls finished first overall with a time of 1 hour, 31 minutes and four seconds.

Karis Frankian led the Centurions, finishing the three-mile race with a time of 17:12 — the third fastest time in Saugus history, according to Paragas.

“I thought it was amazing,” Paragas said. “It was outstanding. After the race I had five college coaches asking about her. It was her coming-out party.”

A trio of Saugus runners finished 12th, 13th and 14th, with Jenay Jauregui finishing with a time of 18:13, Katie Huntington with a time of 18:14 and Jordan McCall’s time of 18:21.

The Golden Valley boys team finished its sweepstakes race with a time of 1:17:30, good for a third-place team finish.

“We were very pleased with our boys,” said Golden Valley co-head coach Rob Evans. “We knew that we had thrown them in the race with the big boys. We just wanted to get them a good hard effort. We were really happy with a third place finish, and we were first in Division 2.

Individually, Kristian Martinez led the Grizzlies with a time of 14:50 and a third place finish. Juan David Garcia finished seventh with a time of 15:03.

“(Martinez) ran a great race,” Evans said. “He was very patient because he had such great leg strength at the end. He really led our team well in a difficult race. He had a lot of poise, and patience and guts to finish the way he did.”

In the varsity races, Valencia posted the best team time in its race, finishing first with a time of 1:37:01, behind Arianna Michaels’ third-place time of 18:39.

In the day’s only race to feature two Foothill League teams, the Canyon girls team finished in second place with a time of 1:38:06, with Hart coming in 12th place with a time of 1:43:53.

Canyon’s top finisher in the race was Madison Hills, who came in 16th place with a time of 19:07.

Augustina Hansen came in 25th place for Hart with a time of 19:31.

On the boys side, Hart finished first overall in its race, posting a team time of 1:21:12. The Indians were led by Sam Peckham’s fifth-place time of 15:53 and Austin O’Neil’s ninth-place time of 15:59.

West Ranch finished its varsity race in fifth place — with a time of 1:26:33 — with Jeffrey Black’s time of 16:33 and 11th-place finish leading the team.

Valencia came in seventh in its race, finishing with a time of 1:23:29. The Vikings’ David Mori, who came in 15th place and posted a time of 16:04, was the top finisher for the team.

At the lower level, the Saugus girls junior varsity team shined during the Girl’s JV National Championship race — finishing first overall with a time of 1:34:53.

Saugus had the first, second and fourth place finishers in Abigail Frankian (18:31), Nina Sassano (18:36) and Jessica McCall (18:55).
