For some, running is a way of life, a hobby that brings peace of mind and a sense of accomplishment, not to mention great-looking legs.

Whatever the reason may be, running is an art that takes dedication and practice. This November, the city of Santa Clarita will challenge runners everywhere at the 13th annual Santa Clarita Marathon
The Santa Clarita Marathon, which is an official qualifying race for the Boston Marathon, will test the physical boundaries of the human body on Sunday. The day will include a full marathon, a half marathon, a 5K Run/Walk and a Kid K run.

All races will begin at 7 a.m., with the exception of the Kid K sponsored by Kaiser Permanente, which will begin at 8:30 a.m.

The marathon hosts thousands of seasoned runners from across the country in the 26.2-mile course.
Each year the marathon continues to grow in size and prestige, thanks to sponsor Parkway Motorcars, the title sponsor for more than nine years.

To kick off the marathon and get in the racing spirit, the city will host a free pre-race Health and Fitness Expo on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hyatt Valencia, for everyone to enjoy. Here runners will be able to sign up for events, and race participants will be able to pick up race bibs and T-shirts.

New this year at the expo will be a guest speaker program; experts will give presentations on everything from injury-free running to buying the perfect running shoes.

The race will begin at the Hyatt Valencia, curve through various Santa Clarita streets and trails and finish at the Westfield Valencia Town Center. Following the completion of all races, awards will be given to the top male and female finishers in the marathon, the half-marathon and the 5K, as well as the top Santa Clarita finishers in both marathons.

Awards will also be given to the top male and female finishers in each age group for the three races. To ensure accurate race times, all races will use the ChampionChip timing system to track runners.

Whatever your age or fitness level, the Santa Clarita Marathon has something for every member of the family! Runners are invited to test their courage in the half marathon or the 5K run/walk, which is a flat, looped course that begins and ends at the Westfield Valencia Town Center. On the course, runners will be offered replenishing water provided by Whole Foods Market and Sparkletts, and at the finish line, runners will be greeted by with fresh fruit from local grocery store Albertsons.

Even kids can get in on the action. The Kid K sponsored by Kaiser Permanente is a great event that promotes health and fitness among children and lets them feel some of the race-day excitement.

The fun, non-competitive event will be a race down-and-back on Town Center Drive. Children 12 and under are encouraged to participate.

Don’t miss out on the fun! Start your training now and be sure to sign up early for the Santa Clarita Marathon. Entry fee for the marathon is $65, $50 for the half marathon, $25 for the 5K and $10 for the Kid K.
Registration is available by mail, online or by walk-in at the Parks and Recreation Activities Center, located at 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway. Marathon and half-marathon registration will not be available the day of the race, so make sure to get your entry in early.

For more information on the marathon, contact Parks and Recreation at (661) 284-1472 or visit the event online at Mark your calendar because the Santa Clarita Marathon is running your way!
