Our city is committed to offering a wide variety of healthful programs and events in our community. A perennial favorite is the annual Santa Clarita Marathon, which returns Nov. 6 for a 16th year.

If you’ve been a Santa Clarita Marathon participant, I want to thank you for your enthusiasm and support.

The 2011 Santa Clarita Marathon includes events for athletes of all levels and even a chance to volunteer. This year’s lineup includes the following opportunities:

Starting between the Hyatt Valencia and Westfield Valencia Town Center at 7 a.m., the revised looped course follows 26.2 miles of roadways, paved city trails and paseos to its finish line at Westfield Valencia Town Center. The marathon is a Boston qualifier and is USATF certified. You may also be interested to learn that because our marathon is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon, an event that has already attracted athletes from 20 states and four countries.  If you are an avid long-distance runner, this is a beautiful, yet challenging course, and the perfect way to test your strength and endurance.

The half-marathon starts simultaneously with the marathon at 7 a.m. and follows much of the same course, but breaks away near mile 12 for a 13.1-mile finish at Westfield Valencia Town Center.  The course is relatively flat, but includes some switchbacks and short inclines and declines on paseo bridges.

This year, the Santa Clarita Marathon Race Committee will be using trails along the San Francisquito Creek as part of the half-marathon and marathon events, thereby reducing the amount of street closure on McBean Parkway.

5K Run
The 5K Run begins at 7 a.m. and includes a looped 3.1-mile course that starts and ends at Westfield Valencia Town Center. This is a great event for runners of all ages.

Mayor’s Walk
If you’ve been looking for a way to get involved with the Santa Clarita Marathon, but running isn’t your pace, then the Mayor’s Walk is for you. This 3-mile community walk begins at 7:15 a.m. and is ideal for families, troops, groups or organizations looking for a safe and simple way to get out and get fit. All participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt and participation medal.

Kid K
The Kid K begins at 8:30 a.m. and is designed to promote health and fitness among children. This noncompetitive event for ages 12 and younger is a quarter-mile course, which starts and finishes at Westfield Valencia Town Center.  Parents may accompany small children.

Volunteer opportunities
Even if you are not a runner, you can be part of the excitement that is the Santa Clarita Marathon. Come out and volunteer for the largest running event in Santa Clarita.

You’ll have fun, meet great people, and enjoy the thrill of victory without breaking a sweat. Volunteer opportunities include everything from pre-race preparation and events to assisting day of at water stations, the start line and the finish.

Health and Fitness Expo
To kick off marathon activities and get in the racing spirit, the city will host a free, prerace Health and Fitness Expo on Nov. 5. The Expo will be held at Hyatt Regency from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature health-related vendors and information booths.  Marathon, half-marathon and 5K registrants must pick up race bibs and T-shirts at the expo.

Online registration for marathon events is open until this Monday at 11:59 p.m. Anyone interested in registering after Sunday may sign up in person at the Health and Fitness Expo on Nov. 5.  Registration for the marathon, half-marathon and 5K run will not be available the day of the race.

Whatever your age or fitness level, the Santa Clarita Marathon has something for you.
