As a member of the Santa Clarita Community College District Board of Trustees, I am enthusiastically endorsing Bruce Fortine for re-election Nov. 8.

I have known Fortine for many years and have always admired and respected him for his loyalty, vision, leadership and his total dedication to College of the Canyons.

Prior to serving of the board of trustees, I served on the COC Foundation board for more than 20 years. I had numerous interactions with Fortine, and I cannot think of a better person to represent our community.
Some of the things Fortine is credited with are listed below:

- Voting for and raising money for several new buildings, such as the Performing Arts Center, the library, the new physical education building, Mentry Hall, Hasley Hall, the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center and the new vocational/technical building on the Canyon County Campus.

- Helping to build the Canyon Country Campus so people on the east side of the valley have easy access to the college.

- He was an early supporter and had a leadership role in building the University Center, where residents can get bachelor’s and master’s degrees, in addition to a variety of teaching credentials, without leaving the valley.

- He has been instrumental in establishing forming relationships with businesses in the valley. COC has more than 500 business partnerships, which benefits both COC and the businesses.

- He was an early supporter of expanding athletic programs such as bringing back football, women’s and men’s soccer, and women’s golf.

- He has been a tireless advocate for COC’s role in training law enforcement personnel, firefighters and nurses.
I know that Fortine is serving on the board for the right reasons. He always does what is best for the students, staff and faculty. He is one of the finest people I know.
