It was a matchup of two teams with similar intentions.

Canyon and Golden Valley girls volleyball were looking for signs of improvement in a season where Foothill League wins haven’t been easy to come by.

For the second time this season, Golden Valley proved it was the better of the two as it clinched fifth place in league with a 3-2 defeat of Canyon on Tuesday at Canyon High School.

The Grizzlies (4-14, 2-8) won the games 25-20, 22-25, 21-25, 25-22 and 15-8 it their season finale.

“You might look at the wins and losses and see 2-8, but for us, it’s like winning league us,” said third-year head coach Jeff Cody.

According to Cody, it was the first time in school history the team won more than one Foothill match in a season.

The Grizzlies were co-led by Sam Jennings and Ashley Lorton’s 11 kills apiece.

Jennings added four aces.

After nabbing the first game, Golden Valley fell behind 2-1 when Canyon (4-9, 0-9) turned up the intensity and disrupted withe Grizzlies’ serve-receive defense.

“We were up in all of (the games) and we couldn’t sustain it,” said Canyon head coach Brandon Johnson. “We played with good, positive energy in games two and three and won those.”

Canyon junior Morgan Fay finished with a match-high 15 kills and added eight digs.

Heather Nony had 13 kills and Courtney Spackman collected 11 kills to go with 20 assists.

Momentum swung back toward Golden Valley in the fourth game, and Cody said that energy was carried directly into the fifth and final game.

“I think we pretty much did the same thing that we did last time,” Cody said of his team’s 3-0 defeat of Canyon on Oct. 13. “And again, we had a great attitude going into the last game and had great confidence.”

On the defensive side, Golden Valley got 35 digs from Hannah Acree and 21 digs Katie Nicholson.

The Grizzlies will graduate just three seniors off the team.

Canyon completes its season today when it hosts Valencia at 5:30 p.m.
