Letter: Fortine’s vision needed, now more than ever

I am writing in support of Bruce Fortine for re-election to the Santa Clarita Community College District Board of Trustees.
As an alumnus of College of the Canyons, I have personally discovered the vast opportunities that the college provides to everyone in this community.

I began my journey at COC in 2006 as a junior in Academy of the Canyons. I quickly discovered that the staff, faculty and administrators at COC consistently go over and above the call of duty to serve the students of COC.

After graduating from AOC in 2008, I decided to run for student trustee for the Santa Clarita Community College District. I won the election and represented the student voice on the Board of Trustees until I graduated in 2010.

During my time as student trustee, I was reminded of the overwhelming attitude of appreciation and care for students that is only found in an institution that has been purposefully focused on student success. I now understand that this is no coincidence, but a result of compassionate and consistent leadership that finds every way of making COC the best place for students to achieve their dreams.

Fortine’s vision for ensuring that students have the opportunities to succeed at COC, no matter how bleak the outlook, is backed up by his experience navigating more than 40 years of challenges in his time on the Board of Trustees.
I ask that you vote for Fortine — a tested advocate for students — for the sake of today’s students and tomorrow’s community.
