The Signal's website has reached the mark of a million page views per month, an upward trend in its website viewing spurred by a "Web first" policy initiated in June, newspaper officials announced Tuesday.

"We realize that the Web has become one of the primary vehicles for distributing journalistic content. As a result, we have devoted considerable resources to enhancing our website content, presentation and delivery," said Morris Thomas, The Signal's interim publisher.

"It is extremely rewarding to see that our efforts to reach out to the community more effectively are being successful."

The Signal's million page views per month was calculated for the time period Oct. 15 through Nov. 14. The website had 162,386 unique visitors during the same time period, up from less than 59,000 unique visitors a month in early 2008 and a little more than 300,000 page views per month in 2008.

Page views represent the total number of views on a website during a given time period, said Joe Choo, The Signal's director of technology and new media.

Unique visitors calculates the number of people who visit the website during the same time period.

The Signal's unique visitors number had been hovering around 135,000 a month before the "Web first" drive in June, Choo said.

"The Web site allows us to report up-to-the-minute news both in story and video format," said Executive Editor Jason Schaff.

"In recent months, our reporting and editing staffs have focused on keeping our readers constantly informed about news in our local community, and these numbers reflect that."
