Signal should have backed Prop. 2

Shame on the editorial board of The Signal for recommending a No vote on Proposition 2, a measure that, if passed, will improve the living conditions of millions of chickens, calves and pigs on factory farms in California.

The editors pointed out that animals killed for food should not be compared to animals kept as pets in the way they are treated.

The morality of killing some animals for food, and not killing animals kept as pets, is a moral issue not addressed by Proposition 2. What it does deal with is the treatment of farm animals during their too-brief time on this earth.

Calves raised for veal are taken from their mothers prematurely and kept for months in crates so small that they cannot lie down or turn around.

Lack of movement causes their leg muscles to atrophy so much that they sometimes cannot walk to their slaughter, and must be dragged.

Pigs are kept in overcrowded pens where they cannot forage or wallow, natural pig behaviors.

Pregnant sows are kept in gestation crates in which they must stay in the same position for months, unable to move, prevented from even standing up.

These intelligent animals become so bored and frustrated that they develop neurotic behaviors. Chickens in battery cages are jammed together so tightly that they cannot even spread their wings.

As with calves and pigs, egg-laying hens suffer both emotional and physical stress because of this unnatural confinement.

Proposition 2 doesn’t ask for much. If passed, Proposition 2 will require that all farm animals have at least enough room to turn around and extend their limbs.

It is a sad commentary on our society that we have to pass a law to guarantee that farm animals are treated with compassion and respect.

Even animals that are going to be killed for food deserve to be treated humanely before their slaughter.
The editorial board of The Signal got it all wrong. Help to relieve the suffering of animals on factory farms. Vote Yes on Proposition 2.
