Patricia McKeon on the issues

On the economy: “Our big problem in the state is jobs, and it really isn’t jobs — it’s industry. We are pushing businesses out at a horrible rate. If you don’t have industry in California, you don’t have jobs. So bringing back industry to California has to do with less regulation, less taxation.”

On education: “I think our kids are not being served well by education in California these days. Schools have been pushing kids all toward post-secondary education. We’re getting a huge dropout rate, and some kids do not want to (go to college). They want to do other things. Teaching kids how to have a job or a skill when they leave high school — we used to do that in California.”

On the budget:
“I think we’re spending our children’s future with these unfunded mandates. They’re just spending money on things that aren’t producing results. ... People don’t mind paying taxes. We need roads. We need clean air. We need sewerage. We need water. We need defense. They don’t mind. What they do mind is money going down a hole and there’s no results. People want to see results for their money.”

On the housing slump:
“People try to stay in their homes. I talked to a little gal at church yesterday and I asked her where she lives and she told me she lives in apartments down here. They had lived out in Castaic. ... I don’t know what the solution is. Greater minds than I have not been able to figure it out either.”

On comparisons to her husband: “I hope they do — honest, trustworthy, want to do something, not just want to be somebody. Want to get things accomplished, want to make things better for California, better for the 38th (Assembly District).”

On experience: “I have lots of ‘no experience’ in a lot of areas, but that doesn’t preclude me from learning.”
