The city of Santa Clarita and the Institute for Local Government provided parents an opportunity to sign their uninsured children up for health care at the Santa Clarita Community Center on Saturday.

The enrollment day was part of the "Communities for Healthy Kids." The program ensures all Santa Clarita Valley children access to affordable health insurance through Healthy Families, a low cost insurance program that provides health, dental and vision coverage for children and teens with no insurance, according to the City of Santa Clarita's Web site.

"Even if we only enroll a few, it is worth it," said Susie Cordova, resource coordinator with the City of Santa Clarita Community Center. The city has a duty to provide health care access for all children, she said.

Among the insurance companies providing different health care packages were Northeast Valley Health Corporation, Blue Cross of California, Molina Healthcare and others.

"I think it's a wonderful way for people to not have to worry about their kids being sick or injured," said Mike Pender of Castaic. a father of a 17- and nine-year-old.
