After winning the CIF State Cross Country Championship on Nov. 26, the Saugus girls and Golden Valley boys traveled to Portland, Ore. on Saturday to take part in the Nike Cross Nationals against some of the top competition from around the country.

The Saugus girls, running under the moniker "Newhall XC Club," made their fifth consecutive trip to the event after finishing in the top four each of the previous four years.

This year Saugus settled for a 12th-place finish this year as Karis Frankian led the Centurions with a time of 18 minutes, 37 seconds, good for 38th overall.

The rest of the Centurions’ scoring runners were Katie Huntington (19:29, 111th place), Jenay Jauragui (19:35, 118th), Abigail Frankian (19:35, 119th) and Jordan McCall (19:50, 132nd). Saugus’ two non-scorers were Heidi Hoslet (20:11, 154th) and Emily McCarty (20:40, 173rd)

Fayetteville-Manlius of New York took home its fifth straight national championship at the event, running as "60 Manlius XC Club" and finishing with a time of 92:00.

"I thought we mentally ran tough," said Saugus head coach Rene Paragas. "We just didn’t have it physically. I was hoping we could finish top 10 but obviously we wanted to do better."

Despite finishing out of the top 10 though, Saugus put together quite the overall season, winning a state-record sixth consecutive state championship this season.

"This is the best year in terms of emotion and us running to our potential," Paragas said. "We exceeded everything we wanted to do. To take on the deepest field the state has ever had and win was an amazing experience."

Unlike Saugus, which has competed in six of the last eight Nike Cross National events, the Golden Valley boys team was making its first trip to the Portland race.

Running as "Santa Clarita XC Club," the California boys state champion Golden Valley team finished 11th in its first trip to nationals.

Juan David Garcia led the Grizzlies with a total time of 16:07 and finished 62nd overall.

Kristian Martinez (16:21, 83rd), Nolan Del Valle (16:22, 87th), Carlos Lopez (16:25, 90th) and Aaron Nguyen (17:14, 172nd) also finished in scoring positions for Golden Valley.

The Grizzlies’ two nonscorers were Gabe Levy (17:37, 182nd) and Brendan Tinoco (17:37, 189th).

Other local runners took part Saturday in the West Foot Locker Cross Country Championships at Mt. San Antonio College.

In the girls seeded race, West Ranch’s Samantha Phillips led local runners with a 96th place finish in 20:31. Her teammate, Taylor Welker, finished 139th in 24:54.

In the girls senior race, West Ranch’s Gabrielle Domingo finished in 109th place in 24:25 and teammate Elizabeth Bravo finished 114th in 24:34.

On the boys’ side, Canyon’s Adam Driedger finished 205th in the boys seeded race in 19:33 and teammate Alex Gutierrez finished 213th in 20:47.

Golden Valley’s Tyrone Chouhan (20:23, 147) ran in the boys senior race and Timothy Garcia (19:05, 109) ran in the junior boys race.
