Why I don't support the hospital plan

Everybody agrees we need more hospital facilities in the Santa Clarita Valley but not everyone supports the present proposal.

I am among the latter.

First of all, Henry Mayo Hospital is accessed by a single road: McBean Parkway.

Several weeks ago, I was stopped in traffic along Orchard Village Road. Traffic was not being allowed on McBean Parkway because of a ruptured water main at Valencia Boulevard.

As I sat in my car for more than half an hour, I wondered if anybody in any of the other cars needed emergency services: a woman in labor or a child needing X-rays or stitches after a mishap on the soccer fields.

Perhaps an ambulance could have gotten through, but none of the cars were going to.

Henry Mayo Hospital is located on a small land-locked campus.

While Centers of Excellence are desirable, they do not need to be directly next to the hospital tower.
My orthopedic surgeon is affiliated with both Cedars Sinai and the Kerlan Job Orthopedic Clinic.
Kerlan Job is a free-standing building in which doctors perform most procedures, from CAT Scans and MRI's all the way up to arthroscopic surgeries.

I have no idea where the nearest hospital is, but it certainly is not within walking distance.

All of the Cedars Sinai orthopedic surgeons have their offices in a medical building a mile from the hospital tower.

The distance does not prevent Cedars from attracting world class doctors or patients from being well cared for.

We need to look at the proposal carefully and determine what needs to be right at the hospital's front door and what might just as easily be placed a bit off campus.

It does us no good to have a hospital whose campus is so crowded and poorly located that nobody can access its facilities.
