Party company raises roofs

In 2011, SOS Entertainment on Santa Clarita staged almost 600 events, up about 100 from last year

Billing itself as the “party specialist,” SOS Entertainment of Santa Clarita is also specializing in one other arena — continuing to grow as a company.

Expanding into new markets and acquiring smaller companies to add to its extensive equipment inventory, SOS Entertainment is heading into another new venture by moving the main headquarters into a larger building.

“Each year, we do more business,” said Derek Sage, owner of the company.

Staging productions for private events, including corporations, schools, weddings and even birthday parties, SOS Entertainment is tripling the size of its physical space by moving into a 6,700 square foot building with 10,000 square feet of yard space off Sierra Highway in Canyon Country.

The company has been operating out of a 3,000 square foot building and a 1,500 square foot storage unit that it rents, but with expansion and new hires SOS Entertainment was out of space.

“It’s much better to have everything under one roof and we have a much better office layout,” Sage said.

The privately owned company was started 10 years ago by Sage when he was 18 years old, he said.

“Today, we have eight full-time employees and 30 part-time or independent contractors on our event team.”

The company anticipates hiring three more full-time people for the Santa Clarita office in the next year.

In 2011, SOS Entertainment staged just less than 600 events, up about 100 from the prior year.

And it’s expanding into new markets.



Expanding through acquisition, SOS Entertainment bought a DJ business in Orange County in 2008 and dissolved it, giving the company added equipment inventory and allowing it to pick up new clients as well.

In November, the company opened an office and warehouse in San Diego and plans to open another office in San Jose in March.

The event-production company starts in a new market with a part-time sales representative and an event planner to drum up business. Plus, a lot of business is generated from the main office by phone, Sage said.

Building up business in each new market until the company has enough commerce to open an office, SOS Entertainment believes it is more cost-effective to build a local presence in each of its markets.

“We want to offer our full line of products and services to each client,” Sage said. “Once we have enough business, having a local office saves the expense of traveling fees, transporting equipment and hotel fees.”

When SOS Entertainment moves into another market, the company locates about 2,500 square feet of warehouse space with front offices.

SOS believes it’s a better business model to open satellite offices as having personnel, equipment and storage space in each community helps keeps fees down for clients.

The event-production company is now ready to hire one full-time staff person in San Diego.

But its strategy for growth might surprise many.



SOS Entertainment grows its business by looking at how many people the company can reach out and contribute.

“Our mission statement is, ‘Discover, progress and contribute,’” Sage said. “We try to discover new ways to discover and progress in service to our clients.”

Springing from that mission, the company also builds up business by participating in leadership conventions and camps and student-government groups throughout the state; making presentations on the topic of leadership to students relying on experience gleaned from staging event productions.

“For a school that has small dances and doesn’t know how to increase school spirit, we take and share our experience from working at events all over,” Sage said. “We try to be a solution to our clients.”

Through the company’s marketing programs, SOS Entertainment has built a presence throughout California.

With a healthy client base in the corporate- and private-event arenas, however, the company continues to focus on large, quality events.

Event production is rewarding, Sage said. Life is a series of events, happy memories that usually evolve around an event in one’s life. It’s a humbling responsibility but one he is excited about at the same time.

“We get paid to celebrate life with people,” Sage said. “We get paid essentially to contribute.”
